Internet Divided After Mom Said Not Letting Dads In Maternity Rooms Overnight Is ‘Outrageous’

A mom’s question on whether or not dads should be allowed to stay the night in maternity rooms has ignited a fierce debate on the internet.

Annie Ridout, from London, declared it “outrageous” to not allow dads to spend the night in hospitals’ postnatal accommodations. She had a point that dads “need to bond too.”

But just like anything on the internet, not everyone welcomed the concept.

Someone asked Annie to share her thoughts on the issue on Twitter after she wrote how her husband was not allowed to spend the night with her in the maternity ward after their son was born.

Annie wrote on Twitter: “I think this is outrageous – unfair on the mother; unfair on the father, who’s being made to feel unimportant. He needs to bond too.

“Do other UK hospitals have this rule?”

A number of other mothers were in total agreement with Annie. They declared the rules to be annoying and made the point that moms need support just after they have given birth to a baby.

One mom commented: “That is insane!! I am in Leicester and my partner was able to stay as long as he wanted. You need support after giving birth.”

Another wrote: “It’s such a valid point especially when a new family are trying to bond, when there’s a lack of night staff and when a woman needs the physical and emotional support.”

Yet another mom had the point that having their husbands with them can offer moral support to new moms and it can also help share the tremendous workload of the midwives.

She said: “So tricky. I remember my husband and I were both crying when he had to leave a few hours after I had my 1st. Absolutely the time we needed each other most. But I do see the predicament.”

As said earlier, not all moms agreed to the proposals, saying that having dads around is disruptive and ruins the peace of the ward.

An opposing mom wrote: “It sounds like a good thing, but after I had someone’s threatening partner staying next to me whilst bed-bound, I changed my mind.

“You want your own partner there, but I really didn’t want anyone else’s.”

While others had the point that having or not having the father around won’t make any difference in terms of making a bond.

One such mom explained her notion, saying: “Hospitals aren’t hotels. It’s one or two nights out of your life. A good dad will bond whatever, doing the first nappy change makes no difference.”

Another wrote: “I wished that partners hadn’t have been allowed to stay as I got so little sleep due to the loudest snoring husband in my ward.”
