This year the mega event became all the more interesting when people witnessed an enormous replica of Darth Vader’s head floating in the air near the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The Star Wars villain was not alone to hover around over the Clifton bridge as there were more than 50 other balloons launched along with it. The balloons belonged to a number of countries from around the globe, including Taiwan and Japan.

The Darth Vader Balloon was co-piloted by Ian Martin, the head of the ballooning team for this year’s fiesta.

He said: “The main pilot is from Belgium so the two of us flew and we worked together to do the flight.

“I have never flown in Darth Vader before. It was emotional because of the work we have put in over the last 24-48 hours to put this on this morning.

“It was emotional for the effort that people had put into getting Darth Vader here and emotional for me to fly in him as well. We would like to thank the public for all the support they have given us.

“People were so excited to see it. We had people come to our landing spot who had followed it across the city.”

The iconic balloon was made by Cameron Balloons in Bristol more than a decade ago and had flown over a number of locations across the world, except for Bristol.

It made flights over Australia and the US during the last decade but it was its first time flying over its birthplace, Bristol.
