A 32-year-old woman has been arrested after she was caught putting her hand on her elderly mother’s mouth and nose in a hospital.
Luciana Paula Figueiredo was arrested for trying to suffocate her mother, 68-year-old Ana Benedita Figueiredo, in her bed in the Dr. Carlos Macieira Hospital in Brazil.
The heartbreaking video, which was recorded by another patient, shows Luciana’s hand over her mother’s mouth and nose.
Her hand seems to be pushing some of the bedding toward the elderly mother’s mouth. At one point, the 68-year-old lifted her hand.
Luciana was arrested and charged with attempted homicide, according to local media reports. Her mother was then taken to the intensive care unit.
The elderly woman has been in the hospital since January 19 due to pulmonary embolism. According to reports, initial investigations pointed to her daughter wanting to kill her as she was exhausted of watching over her.
Police are also investigating if Luciana attempted to tamper with Ana Benedita’s medication after they discovered a syringe in her bag.
“We have information on what motivated this criminal act being the daughter being tired of taking care of an elderly mother, who has several health problems,” said local Superintendent Carlos Allesandro.
“And according to what was passed on by the on-duty officer, this could have been one of the causes of this very serious criminal act against the mother, committed by her daughter.”
The superintendent also said that Luciana claimed she “had a normal relationship with her mother” and had “put her hand on her mother’s mouth with a different aim, that it had nothing to do with killing her.”
The judge ordered Luciana, who is in preventative prison, undergo a biopsychosocial evaluation.
