The 20-year-old father who was shot dead by a female Minnesota cop had a warrant out for his arrest, reports say.
According to the Daily Mail, the court papers they have obtained claim that Daunte Wright had an outstanding warrant for his arrest at the time he was shot by veteran police officer Kimberly Potter who alleged to have accidentally pulled the gun on the man instead of using her taser.
As per the court papers, Wright previously held a woman at gunpoint at threatened to take her life if she didn’t give him $820 of rent money she was hiding in her bra. In addition, the young man allegedly choked his victim and tried to steal her cash with force.
The incident began unraveling on December 1, 2019, when Wright and Emajay Driver were having a party at an apartment owned by two unidentified women. After hanging out with the pair, the women asked the two men to leave their apartment but eventually let them stay after they claimed they had no ride back home.
On the following morning, one of the residents visited a bank to get cash to pay for their rent. She later handed that money over to her roommate and left the building.
When the other woman and the two men were leaving the apartment, Wright allegedly blocked her path and demanded she hands over the rent money given to her by her roommate.
“Defendant Wright then pulled a black handgun with silver trim out from either his right waistband or his right coat pocket and pointed it at victim and demanded the rent money,” Osseo Police Officer Shane Mikkelson wrote in his report.
“The $820 cash was tucked in the victim’s bra and defendant Wright placed his hand around victim’s neck and choked her while trying to pull the cash from under her bra. Victim was able to get loose from defendant Wright and started to kneel down and scream.”
Wright, who was then 19 years old, went on to threaten the woman with his gun as he told her they would leave if she gave them her money.
“Defendant Wright then tried to choke victim a second time and tried to take her money. Defendant Driver was telling her to give defendant Wright the money,” the report adds.
“Defendant Driver then said: ‘Let’s go,’ and the two defendants left and got into a white Cadillac and left the scene. Afterwards, victim found that the cash was still in her bra.”
Following his arrest, Wright was released after his $40,000 bond was paid. In July 2020, however, his bail was revoked after a judge found out Wright didn’t stay in contact with his probation officer and failed to “not possess a firearm or ammunition.”
The judge proceeded by issuing an arrest warrant for the young man. It was found out that Wright still had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on Sunday when he was fatally shot by Officer Kimberly Potter.
