A daycare facility is requesting parents of non-vaccinated kids to keep their children at home after one employee was hospitalized with a rare, deadly infection.
Bright Beginnings daycare sent letters to parents requesting them to take precautions after a staff member was diagnosed with epiglottitis, according to WOWT-TV.
Epiglottitis is a rare and potentially deadly infection that causes the epiglottis to swell, blocking the air flow to the windpipe. The infection is commonly caused by Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) and can be transmitted via sneeze or cough.
Daycare staffers considered closing the facility for several days but then chose to send letters to parents of non-vaccinated children.
“In light of this information, we had considered closing the center for the remainder of the week in order to do a thorough cleaning but after careful consideration, we have decided this would cause a tremendous hardship on our families and are not going to do so,” the letter read.
“We will be taking time today and over the next few days to deep clean as much as we can while still caring for the children.”
The letter asked parents to make new arrangements for kids who haven’t been immunized against Hib.
Hib vaccinations in babies have made contracting the infection rare but the daycare staff who got the epiglottitis was vaccinated.
