A deaf man has taught his adopted deaf and visually impaired dog to communicate with sign language.
When Nick Abbott came to know about a deaf dog named Emerson at the Maine branch of the North Florida Animal Rescue, he decided to meet the dog.
“I was born deaf. I said, ‘Oh, he’s deaf too.’ Maybe I can go check him out to see what he’s all about”, Abbot – who was also born deaf – told WABI-TV.
When Abbot went to meet Emerson, he quickly ran towards him as if he knew him and wanted to be with him.
“He came straight to me at the door and sat right away at my feet and stayed there. So you can tell he kind of picked me.”
“And I knew right then and there that we would get along and understand each other pretty good.”
Abbott is now teaching Emerson sign language so they can communicate and within a few days, Emerson has learned a lot.
Emerson has developed a great bond with Abbott and his other dog named Scout.
“He is such a calm, loving puppy. We have a great connection, and he is so loved – even by Scout,” Abbott said.
“I was drawn to him right away because we have similarities. I felt I could understand him.”
“The bond that we have is awesome. We understand each other very well. I’d like to think it was meant to be. He’s special.”
Emerson can now sit, lay down, stay and follow a number of commands when Nick signs them.
