Hunter Jones, stage IV cancer survivor, didn’t show any early symptoms that would have led to the disclosure of her cancer.
The late diagnosis of Hunter resulted in her disease reaching the last stage and was given a survival rate of five years of about 40-50 percent.
The Washington based girl went to a dentist for her complaint of loose teeth. The dentist, Dr. Harlyn Sussarla who practices at Stellar Kids Dentistry found her teeth condition odd considering her age.
The dentist suggested an X-ray, and after the procedure, it was clear that she had developed a tumor in her jaw.
The parents concerned about their daughter now visited a Seattle Children’s Hospital to know more about Hunter’s condition. The surgeon’s of the hospital confirmed that Hunter has cancer that is formed inside the nerve tissues, Neuroblastoma.
The young Hunter had to go through chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy for 18 months. This type of cancer comes into existence because of the immature nerve cells present in the body.
Neuroblastoma cancer generally begins in adrenal glands, but there is also a possibility of its occurrence in abdomen, spine, or chest.
Every year almost 800 cases of neuroblastoma are diagnosed according to the American Cancer Society.
The possible treatments are radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and surgery. The treatment given to the patient depends upon various criteria that oncologists consider before beginning with the treatment.
Hunter’s treatment that went on for almost a year and a half included two surgeries, twelve sessions of radiation, five cycles of chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and six immunotherapy sessions. The overall treatment is really harsh and also comes with some amount of health risks.
The five-year-old was declared cancer-free last month and post that she wrote a card that said ‘I love you,’ and was meant for the dentist who helped in the process of her diagnosis.
The parents of Hunter are making efforts to raise $50,000 through GoFundMe and so far they have been able to collect $24,500.
