New York can become the first state to stop sex work completely after the group of progressive legislators introduced a sweeping bill pointed at placing the state in a vanguard of growing sex workers rights movement.
The bill can face an uphill battle in the coming year even after both the houses having significant democratic majorities and also it will come in the open about the issue that impacts the group of women and men around the state.
Cecilia Gentili, who is a former sex worker, said that she has been waiting for this day since last 30 years.
She said that she has been in Rikers Island and she will never wish such experiences even for her worst enemies. There are high chances that stop the violence in the sex trade will help in repealing penalties for buying and selling sex.
Also, it will update some other parts of the law that addresses prostitution so that it can be aligned with the repealed charges. Under this law, there are chances that some charges under the prostitution level will be abolished.
The group of legislators said that the decision taken to repeal the promotion charges are to make sure that the sex workers are not criminalized for supporting each other.
Gentili said that criminalizing sex workers just kills the community.
This bill will help the sex workers to apply for criminal record relief if they have ever been convicted due to this cause and also will amend language throughout the penal code to make references for buying and selling.
Silvia Escobar said that people are thinking that decriminalizing sex work will make prostitution legal and human trafficking will be free, but that’s not the case as decriminalization will benefit trans women like us who do sex work for a living.
Though it’s a very long topic of discussion right now and nothing has come to a conclusion, but it seems like soon the decision will be taken for this matter.
