Owing to several tips from the community members, there was an update to the case on Thursday. The Department had identified the suspect and the police thanked the public for their overwhelming support against such an intolerable issue. However, the post did not mention the name of the suspect.

Tania Visintin, a constable at the Vancouver Police Department in a news conference, said that the behavior the suspect showed in the video is despicable and the police department in the city does not tolerate behavior encouraged by prejudice, bias, and hate.

What was more disturbing was the assault that was raised against an older citizen with a serious health condition.

In the video, the suspect was initially seen gesturing aggressively towards someone who is out of the camera’s view while the younger children watched.

He then moved out of frame, grabbed the frail old man by his collar, and dragged him out of the store and pushed him backward. The 92-year old man could not balance and fell on the sidewalk.

He came back to the store, and went back outside, picked up the man from the ground, and helped him sit on the sidewalk. The suspect did it either after realizing what he had done or to make himself appear less guilty.

The workers at the convenience store were helping the 92-year old man who they reveal suffers from dementia before the suspect began yelling racist slurs at him that included comments about COVID-19.

The police also revealed that there had been a rise in racist attacks against Asians within the city. Out of eleven hate crimes reported in March, five of them were anti-Asian.
