Disney blocked Johnny Depp from making a cameo appearance in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, reports claim.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company had distanced itself from the star even before the ‘wife beater’ libel trial.
The 57-year-old actor played Captain Jack Sparrow in all five POTC movies from 2006 to 2017.
But according to the THR report, Disney ‘balked’ at executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s idea of bringing the actor back for a cameo in the new spin-off.
The company reportedly thought Depp’s cameo appearance could do some damage to the franchise’s family-friendly image.
Despite Bruckheimer’s efforts to get the actor to return, the entertainment conglomerate said no.
Last month, more than 300,000 people signed a petition to bring Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.
“They have to bring him back to rule the seas again or we will never watch any Pirates of the Caribbean movie without our Captain,” the petition reads.
Aside from the Pirates of the Caribbean, Depp was also removed from the ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ franchise after losing the ‘wife beater’ libel case against The Sun newspaper.
Depp said at that time: “The surreal judgment of the court in the UK will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal.”
Jenny Afia, his solicitor from the Schillings law firm, had said the High Court ruling was “as perverse as it is bewildering.”
“The judgement is so flawed that it would be ridiculous for Mr Depp not to appeal his decision,” she added.
The same judge denied the actor’s permission to appeal and ordered him to pay £628,000 in legal costs to the newspaper.
