Johnny Depp and Ember Heard’s Legal Battle Begins With Admission of Drug Usage and Recordings

The court is taking place in the United Kingdom’s High Court, where Depp sued British media outlet The Sun over its cover that argued Depp had beaten Heard while the two were married to each other. The actor took stand on the first day.

From the beginning, the defense tried to murk the image of Depp by referring to his troubled past. The two main points that they emphasized was Depp’s excessive usage of substances and an infamous 1994 incident in which Depp trashed the room of a New York City Hotel.

The star of the “Pirates of Caribbean” series admitted that he had his hands on virtually all kinds of substances by the age of 14 because of his troubled childhood. Depp explained that it was the only way he could get over the pain as he was growing up.

At the same time, he underplayed the 1994 incident in which he was arrested for trashing a room of the Mark Hotel. Depp said that all he did “was make a few dents”, although the actual damage he cost was much greater.

Experts explain that this must be part of a coordinated strategy since admission of a more volatile, physically violent behavior will be used negatively against the actor while substance abuse does not bear direct links to the matter of domestic violence.

Depp denied Heard’s arguments that that there was a monstrous side inside him, arguing that in fact he was the victim of violence as he tried to de-escalate the situation in their home.

One of the more surprising reveals of the day was when Depp’s legal team played in court a 2015 recording of Heard, in which she uses the f-word to say she was hitting Depp – an explosive and concrete evidence that seemed to corroborate the words of the 57 year old actor.
