Disgraced cop Derek Chauvin is facing up to 75 years in prison after being found guilty on all charges.
Following more than ten hours of deliberation, the jury in Chauvin’s trial has reached a verdict and found the former Minnesota officer guilty of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree unintentional murder, and third-degree murder.
Chauvin, who appeared to be silent and calm as the verdict was read in the courtroom of Hennepin County, is now facing up to 75 years in prison with a minimum sentence of 29 years behind bars if he serves terms for his charges consecutively.
If the judge rules the former cop can serve each term concurrently, however, he faces up to 40 years in prison with a minimum sentence of 12.5 years behind bars.
After the verdict was read by the jury, the crowds that gathered outside the Hennepin County courthouse burst into cheering and celebration.
According to the reports, the jury didn’t request to review any of the exhibits or videos that were previously shown in the courtroom during their ten-hour deliberation. The jurors also didn’t reach out to the judge with any additional questions.
Prior to the reading of the verdict, the City of Minneapolis braced for potential rioting that could result from the jury’s decision by deploying some 3,000 National Guard troops and over 1,000 officers throughout the city to keep an eye on discontented protesters and maintain order in the city regardless of the outcome.
Following the jury’s verdict, Judge Peter Cahill thanked the jurors for their “heavy-duty jury service.” It is believed that the case will now move to the pre-sentencing phase immediately.
Meanwhile, Chauvin’s bail has already been revoked and the former officer was taken into custody pending sentencing.
