A CNN report has revealed that Derek Chauvin, the police officer who has been accused for the death of George Floyd, could still receive over $1 million when he retires even if the judge rules that he is responsible for the death of Floyd.
Chauvin and his extremely violent manner with which he put a chokehold on Floyd that eventually led to Floyd’s death has increased racial tensions to unprecedented levels.
Along with the three other officers who were present during the arrest, Chauvin has been fired from the police department and faces a second-degree murder charge. He had been working as a police since 2001, despite having multiple complaints raised against him.
However, the peculiarities of Minnesota’s laws over retired federal workers, Chauvin will still be eligible for his pension. This seems especially more controversial as part of the pension fund comes from the Minnesotan taxpayers, who have expressed great anger over Chauvin.
When asked by CNN, The Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Association said that Chauvin will be able to ask for his retirement fund as early as 2026 when he turns 50.
A spokesperson confirmed that unless the former officer voluntarily gives up his fund, there is nothing that the association can do to prevent him from filing for his rightful pension. The spokesperson also confirmed that the cause of retirement does not factor in.
Although both the association and Chauvin’s lawyers did not specify the amount, CNN estimates that Chauvin could receive some $50,000 per month when he files for his pension 2031 when he turns 55. If he has records of overtime work during his career, the numbers would be even greater.
Among the three other former officers who were charged, at least one more is predicted to be eligible for a retirement fund. Public Safety pensions are often cited as one of the safest and most generous pension funds around the US, which is partially paid by taxpayers.
Police unions have used great political capital to ensure that former officers can receive these generous pensions even when officers are forced into retirement for their conducts. It seems likely that the protestors, who have called for defunding the police, will ask changes to this practice.
