Following Derek Chauvin’s conviction, fresh details about the former cop’s new ‘home’ have been released.
After the former Minnesota cop was booked into Minnesota Correctional Facility-Oak Park Heights, the state’s only level five maximum-security prison, it has been revealed that Chauvin was placed on suicide watch.
It has now also come to light that the disgraced officer spends 23 hours per day inside his tiny 7-by-10-foot prison cell and has minimal contact with other inmates and security guards.
According to the reports, Chauvin’s prison cell is being monitored by security cameras, whereas guards check on him every half an hour.
For the next several weeks, until his sentencing, the 45-year-old will remain in his single prison cell as part of his solitary confinement.
As it was revealed, Chauvin is only allowed out of his cell for an hour each day in order to exercise.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Department of Corrections revealed that the former cop is under administrative segregation for his own safety. Besides being at risk of suicide, Chauvin could become a target of other inmates with violent backgrounds and despise for law enforcement.
As for his new home, Chauvin’s prison cell is fitted with nothing but a cement slab bed, a thin mattress, a toilet and sink made of steel to prevent inmates from breaking them, and a table. The escape-proof cell also features thin rectangular windows and heavy-duty steel door.
As of this writing, the Administrative Control Unit at MCF is home to 41 inmates including Chauvin. All of these inmates have minimal contact with other people and are regularly checked on by security guards.
“Oak Park Heights operates at the highest custody level of any facility in the Minnesota DOC system,” the prison states. “Most individuals housed in the facility are designated at either maximum or close custody levels.”
