Derek Chauvin’s sentencing has been completed with the former Minnesota cop getting sentenced to twenty-two and a half years in prison.
As Judge Peter Cahill concluded, Chauvin abused his position of authority and treated George Floyd with “particular cruelty” during the shocking arrest back in May 2020.
Handing down the 270-month sentence, Cahill said: “This is based on your abuse of a position of trust and authority and also the particular cruelty shown to George Floyd. I’m not basing my sentencing on public opinion, I’m not basing it on any attempt to send any messages.”
Though the former police officer was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison, he is expected to serve just 15 and could be released on good behavior after he becomes eligible for parole.
On top of the prison sentence, Chauvin will be registered as a predatory offender and will be banned from possessing firearms and ammunition for the rest of his life.
“Mr. Chauvin, rather than pursuing the MPD mission, treated Mr. Floyd without respect and denied him the dignity owed to all human beings and which he certainly would have extended to a friend or neighbor,” judge Cahill wrote in the sentencing memo.
The sentencing followed shortly after Chauvin spoke to the Floyd family for the first time. While addressing the grieving family, including George’s daughter Gianna, the former cop said he hoped this will bring some relief to the family but failed to apologize for his actions.
“There’s going to be some other information in the future that would be of interest. And I hope things will give you some peace of mind. Thank you,” he said.
