The global pandemic has stirred everyday life for millions of people around the globe. However, one phenomenon that even the most renowned virologists didn’t expect had to do with an owner of a private zoo extremely questionable ethics in the middle of Oklahoma.
That individual would be none other than Joe Exotic, the ‘star’ of the Netflix hit docuseries Tiger King. What seemed like a documentary that will deal with animal rights quickly turned into an insight into some of the most bizarre individuals ever captured on camera.
A series where a zookeeper losing his arm because of a tiger bite is somehow considered the least exciting part became a global sensation for Netflix users across borders.point 256 |
From petitions that asked for Exotic to be pardoned to even weirder fan theories about individuals, Tiger King is one of the hottest shows that everyone is talking about right now.point 152 | 1
Reflecting its insane popularity, the now 8-part series had been the most watched feature on Netflix among American users for the last 25 days. It short but cult like reign has been ended by a movie.
Rather surprisingly, the movie that pulled Tiger King down was not some newly released superhero film – the honor belonged to Despicable Me, a film released a solid 10 years ago. Though the sequels weren’t received as positively, the original movie had been rated positively by both critics and fans alike.
It was the film that first introduced the lovable minions to audiences. Although they were not the main characters of the movie, their popularity led to global merchandising efforts along with a spinoff movie that starred the yellow creatures.
Although the movie is 10 years old, it hadn’t been available on Netflix until this week for American viewers. Its timing coincided as the fad for quirky zookeepers were starting to dwindle, making it top the charts on the biggest streaming service online.
Tiger King still remains a solid second, as it continues to top charts in other countries such as the United Kingdom. Whether this will change as more movies become available on Netflix remains to be seen.
