As Brett’s wife Becky was preparing for the c-section to give birth to their third child, he chatted and joked around with the medical team.
Becky was a cancer nurse at the Northampton General, the same hospital where she was going to give birth. Brett knew the doctors and nurses as his wife’s colleagues and friends.
Minutes after she gave birth to a healthy baby boy via pre-planned caesarian section, she went into the coma without getting the chance of holding her newborn son. She was fighting for her life in the intensive care unit at the hospital.
Becky suffered a cataclysmic cardiac arrest right after giving birth to her son and never regained consciousness. She was put under life support for three days before the doctor switched it off as she was dead.
Having a baby has never been safer, but women dying during childbirth are so rare. It is a heartrending reminder about the fragility of life.
Becky was a fit young woman who has had two previous successful childbirths. It was a straightforward procedure, and no one was anticipating a tragedy that shattered a family.
Effortlessly beautiful, Becky was devoted to her family. Her husband and children were all she needed, and she was looking forward to welcoming their third child into the world.
Five weeks have been passed and Brett, now a single father, is caring for their children – 9-year-old Ashton, 5-year-old Dolcie-Belle, and baby Hudson, while struggling with the sudden, inexplicable trauma of losing Becky.
Brett said that she was perfectly healthy, no sign of any distress or health complications and went to the hospital to give birth. He said that now no one will ever see her again, little Hudson will never be able to experience the love Becky showered.
He said that each night at 8:30, he put the kids to bed and go to sleep with them. There is no Becky to whom he could talk about his day; there is no one to share the silences with except his kids.
But he said that he couldn’t grieve, he can’t break down because he has to take his little Dolcie to dance classes and Ashton for football practice. He said that he cooks, wash clothes, sterilize bottles, change diapers, and do the night feeds every four hours. His hands are filled, he has to raise his kids rightly, and for that, he has to roll up his sleeves.
He is doing the best for the kids, and he says that he talks to his wife. He talks to her about how the whole family misses her badly and one day they hope that they will be able to see her again.
Brett and Becky have known each other all their lives since they were kids. They had postponed their wedding because they first wanted to save for a four-bedroom family home that they recently bought in Northampton.
They conceived their third baby when they were on their honeymoon in Dubai nine months ago. She has had two caesareans previously, and this time too, they had no worries.
When Hudson was born, Becky smiled, and before she could hold him, the carnage started.
