Soccer legend Diego Maradona has slammed his critics who compared him to Buzz Lightyear after he wore a face visor to protect himself from coronavirus.
The Gimnasia manager arrived at San Lorenzo with a large face mask that covered the top of his head down to his neck.
The 1986 World Cup winner arrived with his 7-year-old son Diego who also wore a huge clear face visor to protect himself against coronavirus.
People on social media are quick to make comparisons to Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear, with one writing: “Is that Diego Maradona or the new live action Buzz Lightyear?”
Luis Miguel Echegaray tweeted: “Returns with a pre season game between San Lorenzo and Diego Maradona’s Gimnasia.
“I don’t think I need to emphasize that Diego is taking ZERO con la Covid.”
Social media users shared side by side photo of Maradona and Buzz Lightyear, but he did not see the funny side of their posts.
Taking to Instagram, Maradona wrote: “Today I left my house with this mask, which my doctor recommended.
“It is the same one being used by some doctors. I did it out of duty and respect for those who have died from COVID-19. And I was met with some mockery from adults, from boys and from some journalists.”
He continued: “Those journalists who criticise you when you don’t take care of yourself. And when you take care of yourself, too. Those who laugh at people like me, but when they give the death toll, they are scandalised.
“It would be good for them to understand that they cannot sell themselves at all costs, without respect for anything or anyone. Agree on it, guys.”
