We all know that dogs have very unique and complex personalities about them.
Whether it’s the way they greet you at the door, or how they tell us that they want to play or go on a walk. As owners we want to know what every little action means, as it defines our dog’s personalities!
In the guide below we will talk about all the different ways our furry friends sleep and what it suggests about them. It turns out dogs that are used to being outdoors more often will sleep very differently from dogs used to being indoors. The way dogs sleep is due to how safe they feel and if they want to preserve heat or not.

After reading be sure to tell us how YOUR dog sleeps! Let us know in the comments!
1. The Side Sleeper
A lot of dogs absolutely love to sleep on their side. According to Dog’s Best Life, this position is a restful dog sleep position.
A dog that sleeps on their side is very comfortable with their environment, feel secure with themselves and aren’t very high-maintenance.
Even if your dog is a bit guarded when they’re awake, your dog knows that they are secure when they sleep so they can relax when sleeping. They love your company and have a huge amount of trust in you as their owner.
This position is most common with dogs who are happy-go-lucky and incredibly loyal.
2. The Snuggly Fox
This sleeping position is most common for dogs that are kept outdoors. This position allows for the dog become almost like a ball, with its paws tucked in and its tail curled around to its face.
This position leaves the dog the least vulnerable, but it also means that the dog will rarely get the rest it needs, according to Dog’s Best Life.
This position also allows the dog to conserve their body heat efficiently.
Despite this position not allowing for the best sleep, dogs who most commonly sleep like this are gentle and easy-going.

3. The ‘Superman’ Pup
An absolutely adorable way for your dog to sleep! In this position your dog has its hind-legs stretched out behind and its front paws stretched out forward, their head resting between. This position resembles the superhero “Superman” as he flies through the air.
This position allows the dog to sleep very well, but also allows them to jump right up as soon as you move!
Dogs who sleep like this are typically high energy and are easily motivated.
4. The Crazy Legs
Don’t be concerned of this slightly odd position, it is actually quite normal for a dog who feels safe and secure!
This position leaves your dog very vulnerable, so it’s exceptionally rare to see an outside dog sleep like this. If you have an indoor dog though, it shows how safe they feel in your company.
This sleeping position suggests that the dog may be laid-back, but also be a bit more independent than usual.

5. The Tummy Curl
This position looks like your dog just passed out mid-walk! This position may provide less restful sleep for your dog as their muscles are still too tense to really sleep.
Don’t worry though, this position just allows them to get up and ready to play with very quickly.
If you find your dog sleeping like this a lot, it means that they’re very gentle, although they may be a bit on the shy side.
6. The Passed Out
This position, like Crazy Legs, is more common with indoor dogs. Passed Out allows for the dog to quickly cool itself off, as it exposes the belly.
Dogs who have had an exciting day will sleep this way in order to allow them to cool off, but also have a really comfortable sleep.
Only really confident and secure dogs will sleep like this. This position often means your dog is very adaptable to new and fresh situations.
