An adorable disabled tortoise has gone viral after its owner installed mini wheels to help the animal move around and be more independent.
Helix the tortoise was unable to use his hind legs due to being born with a spinal deformity. Nevertheless, the little animal was capable of getting around by using mini wheels that his owner installed on Helix’s shell.
To show the world what Helix is capable of with a little help, his owner, Pennsylvania-based Randy Betz Jr., created an Instagram account where he shares the adventures of the tortoise.
As Randy explained, he provides people with spinal deformities with devices that help them become more independent – and that’s exactly what he did with Helix as well.
Unfortunately, Helix died some six months after he hatched. Despite the animal’s tragic end, his story lives on and inspires people from around the world.
Thanks to Helix’s influence, Randy was able to create a series of children’s books that promote inclusivity and diversity through the tortoise’s story.
In addition, Randy was also inspired to start the Helix Wheels Foundation that focuses on supporting those with mobility problems and providing them with the necessary equipment to be more independent.
While Helix may be gone, Randy continues to share photos of the animal on Instagram where he has gained almost 100k followers.
Speaking of the change Randy saw in Helix after he received a pair of wheels, the proud owner said:
“When Helix’s wheels were attached, he literally changed personalities. It was like he turned into Superman. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t accomplish, especially eating.”
