It’s been nearly three decades since Hocus Pocus aired and Disney+ has announced that the sequel of the Halloween classic is in the works.
Not only are we getting the second part of the witch-inspired horror movie, but the creators have also confirmed that they have contacted the original cast in an attempt to get them to work together one more time.
In the original movie, which aired in 1993, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, and Bette Midler played the three evil witch sisters who were brought into the modern world thanks to a resurrection spell.
While the reports suggest that the three actresses don’t have any ties to the sequel yet as of this writing, Disney has confirmed they were interested in getting them involved.
Despite the fact that the movie didn’t reel in much money in its beginnings, it somehow became a Halloween classic, whereas it is still played on hundreds of channels on a yearly basis.
Speaking of the movie’s success to Entertainment Weekly on the 25th anniversary of Hocus Pocus, now-54-year-old Jessica Parker said:
“I don’t think any of us who were making it at the time thought Hocus Pocus would have such a long life. People tell me all the time they grew up watching it, and that they still watch it. I think it’s wonderful.”
As the film’s director, Kenny Ortega, added, the initial response of the critics left him “heartbroken and disappointed.”
However, as the film grew more popular, he knew that it was a success after all.
“People have just found it and found the treasure that is there with Kathy and Bette and Sarah; their wonderful, incredible chemistry and good humor,” he said. “It’s just a fun movie that just takes you away and there’s just magic there.”
