A group of divers was left stunned after coming across a giant ‘egg’ floating in the ocean while they were searching for a sunken ship.
The mysterious discovery occurred somewhere off the coast of Norway where divers Brynjar Aarnseth, Ronald Raasch, and Nils Baadness found something even more interesting than the sunken WWII vessel they were searching for.
Some 60 feet below the surface of the sea, the divers spotted a giant orb-like object that appeared like a saggy egg.
As they got closer and pointed their flashlights at it, the divers noticed thousands of tiny animals swimming in it.
“At first I thought it was a giant jellyfish, but when we came a bit closer, we saw that this was [like] nothing else we had seen before. It was amazing,” one of the divers said in an interview with The Dodo.
As Mr. Baadness added, the team realized the floating object was actually a rare giant squid egg overcome with new life.
“To see it in person was a once-in-a-lifetime moment,” he said of the rare encounter.
After the footage of the mysterious egg went viral, REV Ocean researchers confirmed they have been researching such egg sacs.
“They were genetically tested, and turned out to match the 10-armed squid Illex coindetii (southern shortfin squid).
The jelly ball from the video […] has not been genetically tested, but is similar to the other jelly balls which have been tested,” Halldis Ringvold of Sea Snack Norway’s Gelatinous Sphere Project said in an interview with The Dodo.
