A divorced couple is facing jail time after abandoning their dog and letting him starve to death following their failed marriage and the decision to move out of their joint home.
According to the prosecutors, Michael and Amanda Setser from Indianapolis vacated their trailer after deciding to go through with their divorce.
Despite the couple moving out, however, no one thought of Chuck the Husky who stayed in the home all alone. The abandoned pet, who was left with no food or water after Michael and Amanda left, was found dead in the trailer around 10 days after the couple moved out.
Following the owners’ callous actions, 28-year-old Amanda has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty while her partner, 31-year-old Michael, has been charged with misdemeanor abandonment or neglect of an animal.
As the prosecutors suggest, the couple “failed to take Chuck with them or provide him with food and water” following their decision to move out and go separate ways.
Previously, Amanda told the detectives that her former husband asked her to pick up Chuck and their pet cats several times because he wasn’t willing to care for them any longer. The 28-year-old, in return, claimed that she wasn’t able to care for them.
“These domesticated animals are helpless and completely dependent on their owners to care for them,” Joe Villanueva, Chief Deputy Prosecutor, said.
“Crimes like these could easily be avoided if people would just show a little compassion and take their animals to the Johnson County Animal Shelter.”
Following the incident, both sides were arrested and released from detainment after posting bond. If found guilty of animal cruelty, both Amanda and Michael could face a maximum sentence of 1 year in prison on top of a $5,000 fine. All of the cats survived.
