Everyone has their little quirks and they can range from things like never drinking from glasses outside the home without a straw or meticulously washing one’s hand almost every time one touches something.
They don’t really disrupt our daily lives too much but no matter how seemingly inconsequential these quirks may be, they are absolute red lines that no one is allowed to cross.
For one writer named Susan Shain, her particular red line involves sitting (or sleeping) on her bed when you’re still in your outside clothes. It doesn’t matter if it’s a date or she’s having friends sleep over for the night, nothing but nothing that ever stepped out of the house is allowed to touch her bed.
Her particular rule sometimes leads to awkward moments such as one time when she told her to take off his clothes. Seeing the bewildered yet excited look in his eyes, she had to follow up that statement with: “I’m not going to sleep with you, but you can’t sit on my bed in your street clothes.”
And saying those words, had to go into an even longer conversation about her particular proclivity. Her rule doesn’t only apply to people but also to other items like suitcases or purses. And yes, she’s the type of person who would shower first even after coming home from the bar.
And when guests are confused, she explains it this way: “Just think about where your clothes have been: on a subway seat, a city bench, a bar stool. Now think about who else has been on those seats, benches, and stools. Would you invite them into your bed? I didn’t think so. Well, then what makes their sweat or cooties or bodily particles any different?”
It’s not that she’s afraid of contracting a virus or fleas, though those are legitimate concerns, it’s just that she doesn’t want anything dirty on her bed.
Her friends found out just how serious Susan was about this rule during one road trip in Nashville. She and two of her friends came back to their room later than everyone else, who were already asleep. Trying to keep quiet, one of her friends made her way to the bedroom to get their pajamas.
However, Susan saw that her friend had grabbed the leggings she had worn on the plane, which to her is the worst place for clothes to come in contact with all those dirt and germs. A quick look at Susan’s face said it all so her friend asked what was wrong.
“Those are street leggings,” Susan replied in disgust.
Her ridiculous answer, and probably all the vodka they had consumed, inadvertently set them all laughing silly which woke up the rest of the girls. One added benefit though was that she was able to grab clean leggings now that she didn’t need to sneak around.
While Susan’s rule might seem like such a bother, she sees her bed as a sanctuary and doesn’t all the dirt and germs from outside touch her sheets if she can help it. And that’s why she’s #SorryNotSorry about her quirk.
Some of her friends have even adopted her rule. And for those dates she decided to sleep with, they didn’t mind her asking them to take off their clothes.
