A young doctor has died of a cardiac arrest after fighting the new strain of coronavirus on the front line for ten days straight.
According to a local authority, 27-year-old Song Yingjie was the team leader at a local clinic in Hunan Province, which borders Hubei, the epicenter of the outbreak.
Yingjie was responsible for giving temperature checks to passengers and drivers, and officials said that he had no rest for ten days.
In addition, he was also in charge of distributing medical supplies of the clinic.
This heartbreaking news came as doctors in the country were hailed as heroes for working non-stop to fight the virus, which started in Wuhan, China and has killed at least 490.
Yingjie passed away after going back to his dorm.
His sister is currently stuck in Wuhan as the area has been in quarantine for almost two weeks. She described him as ‘thoughtful’ and ‘outstanding’ and said she couldn’t believe he’s gone.
In an interview with The Paper, she said: “He always helped with housework at home and was regarded highly at work by his boss.
“His passing is really devastated news to our family.”
Yingjie’s father told the local news outlet: “My daughter is in Wuhan and can’t come back. It’s on lockdown. You asked me if I am worried, of course I am.
“Then my son worked [as a medic] on the highway. You asked me if I am scared… Now he died, I am heartbroken.”
According to local officials, they were assisting the doctor’s family.
The deadly coronavirus, which can be transmitted through saliva, has killed at least 490 and infected over 24,000 worldwide.
