A doctor has gone viral on TikTok and other social media platforms after he revealed that cockroaches are usually found in pre-ground coffee beans.
Dr. Karan Raj from the UK explained that ground coffee includes a percentage of insects in its ingredients but reassured his viewers that it is safe to consume them.
“Just so you know if you drink coffee, you’re also consuming cockroaches,” he said on TikTok, where he received thousands of comments from ‘petrified’ coffee lovers.
“Pre-ground coffee like you get in most stores contains a certain amount of cockroaches. Certain percentage of coffee beans becomes infected with cockroaches and other insects,” the NHS doctor explained.
“Usually they can’t be processed out completely. So they just get roasted and ground up with the coffee beans.
“Most food authorities allow a certain percentage of bug parts in our food. Cockroaches are high in protein. If you’re allergic to cockroaches, I’d stay away from pre-ground coffee.”
Dr. Raj continued: “Some people who work in coffee processing often become allergic to cockroaches as a result of constantly handling the beans.”
His post gained over 148,000 likes, with many joking that the revelation had ‘ruined’ their lives.
One person commented: “Okay dude some information you do not need to tell us, we are all coffee drinkers how dare you ruin our coffee in the morning.”
Another wrote: “You’re telling me I have been drinking the very thing I am terrified of my entire life!??”
A third added: “I could have gone my WHOLE LIFE without knowing this.”
Someone else said: “A certain weight of “insect parts” is allowed in all prepared foods. It is unavoidable.”
