Dr.
Alain Gauthier, who has a PhD in respiratory mechanics, has transformed one ventilator into nine with DIY mechanics.
The anesthetist at the Perth and Smith Falls District Hospital got the idea after watching videos on YouTube, CBC News reported.
With experts warning that many countries don’t have enough ventilators, medics have been trying to come up with ideas on how to make their medical device work for numerous patients.
According to Canadian Press, for the device to perform, patients with similar lung size and capacity will be paired.
Dr. Gauthier said he is worried hospitals may not have enough ventilator to treat patients who need it.
In an interview with CBC News, he said: “At one point we may not have other options. The option could be well, we let people die or we give that a chance.”
Canadian Press reported that Dr. Gauthier said the idea has tested before for victims of a mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017.
Alan Drummond, Dr. Gauthier’s colleague, shared pictures of the 9-in-1 ventilator on Twitter. He wrote: “So in ten minutes the evil genius who is one of our GP anesthetists (with a PhD in diaphragmatic mechanics) increased our rural hospitals ventilator capacity from one to nine!!!”
One Twitter user commented: “Whomever needs to, give dude a BIG FAT RAISE.”
Another wrote: “Please share exactly what he did so we can share and get to hospitals and everywhere!”
A third said: “Pretty cool to fix a shortage that has not occurred. It will be interesting to see how it work if a real shortage actually does occur. Of particular interest will be the level of cross-contamination between several people sharing the same airflow and exhaust.”
Someone else added: “Pure genius. Gifted.”
