The doctor, who was one of the first ones to warn the world about the deadly coronavirus, has died from the virus.
34-year-old Li Wenliang, an ophthalmologist at a hospital in Wuhan, was one of the first Chinese doctors who warned about coronavirus.
Dr. Wenliang and seven others were accused of spreading “illegal and false” information about the coronavirus and were detained.
Later, what he said turned out to be true and the deadly virus emerged in December in China.
Dr. Wenliang died of the virus on Friday at Wuhan Central Hospital where he worked.
The hospital said in a statement: “Our hospital’s ophthalmologist Li Wenliang was unfortunately infected with coronavirus during his work in the fight against the coronavirus epidemic.”
“He died at 2:58 am on Feb 7 after attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful.”
Dr. Wenliang’s death sparked outrage online who was branded a ‘Hero’ after warning about the virus.
On China’s Twitter-like platform, Weibo, topics like “Wuhan government owes Dr. Li Wenliang an apology,” and “We want freedom of speech” started trending.
The coronavirus, which is believed to have originated in the central city of Wuhan in China, has killed more than 600 people and infected more than 30,000 across the world.
Several cities have been placed under lockdown in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
More than a dozen drugmakers are working to find a vaccine or a treatment for the virus that continues to spread across the world but currently, there are no effective drugs for the virus.
Meanwhile, Trump administration has banned foreign nationals, except the immediate family of US citizens, who have traveled in China in the last two weeks, from entering the US.
