A doctor in Wuhan tested positive for coronavirus after the city reported zero cases for five days in a row.
This comes after a leading coronavirus expert warned that the mission ‘has not been accomplished’ in Wuhan city, the former epicenter of coronavirus pandemic.
The doctor, who works at the Hubei Provincial People’s Hospital, is the only case reported by the Wuhan Municipality Health Commission.
The recovery of 426 people and seven new deaths were also recorded.
Officials are trying to determine how the medic contracted coronavirus but they said that they weren’t ruling out the possibility that the doctor had contracted the infection at work.
Wuhan has registered 50,006 infections, 43,214 recoveries, and 5,254 deaths since the outbreak started in December.
A leading doctor in Beijing revealed she was ‘very worried’ about a possible second outbreak because of the rising number of cases detected among those returning from abroad.
Prof Li Lanjuan, who led her team to combat the virus, said there were still many patients getting treatment in Wuhan.
“The mission in Wuhan has not been accomplished, and there are still many critical patients. Furthermore, I think the current situation in our country is very tough,” she told People’s Daily.
“[I am] very worried that imported cases could trigger another large-scale epidemic in our country.
“Can we make every effort to guard our country and prevent another epidemic from happening? This is a tough challenge.”
According to the Global times, inadequate quarantine measures and loopholes in health screening process for people returning from abroad are the main factors for the new cases.
