A seven-year-old boy from India had 526 teeth due to a rare condition. Doctors have now removed all 526 teeth from his mouth.
Ravindran had swelling on the right side of his lower jaw since the age of three.
During his treatment, doctors found out that it was a case of “compound composite odontoma”.
Surgeons carried out five-hour procedure at Chennai’s Saveetha Dental College and Hospital to remove the teeth.
“We opened up the jaw after administering general anesthesia and saw a sack inside it,” Dr. Senthilnathan, who led the operation, said.
“The sack, weighing about 200g, was carefully removed.”
Dr. Pratibha Ramani, another surgeon at Chennai’s Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, told The Times of India: “The teeth were in different sizes that varied between 0.1 mm to 15mm.”
“They looked like pearls in an oyster. Even the smallest piece had a crown, root and an enamel coating like a tooth.”
Dr. Ramani added: “We have never seen these many teeth in any one site. His original teeth were left alone.”
A similar case came to light when a 17-year-old had 232 denticles removed in 2014. It was also a case ‘compound composite odontoma’.
When the story went viral, people were left shocked. One user wrote: ‘I’m complaining about the 6 wisdom teeth and this boy had more than that. My goodness’ while another added: ‘Poor baby…I’m glad that this was discovered & removed’.
One user said: ‘Poor baby, that had to be a horrible experience. Thank goodness the Doctors were able to get those out of him.’
Another wrote: ‘Poor baby, thank goodness for modern medicine.’
There were some who shared their own stories. One user wrote: ‘My sons baby teeth didn’t fall out until he was 15. He had 2 sets of teeth for 15 years’.
