Doctors claim that a 60-year-old man has lived all his life with only half a brain.
The Russian ex-soldier had no clue that there was a black hole in his skull where the left hemisphere of the brain is supposed to be.
The retired engineer, who has also served in the Red Army, holds a degree from a university. He has also raised a family without any health problems.
Medics in Moscow made the stunning discovery whilst running a CT scan when the man was hospitalized after a mini-stroke.
There are certain extremely rare conditions in which the missing parts of the brain lead to severe disabilities and early deaths. However, this man’s case of no symptoms is unique according to the doctors.
It is most likely that the defect developed when the man was an embryo. Also, if the technology in the 1950s could have detected this, his mother would have been asked to terminate.
It is not yet clear what fills the hole in the skull of the man. In a similar condition that is rare, known as hydranencephaly, a child is born with a majority of the brain’s tissue missing and fluid takes its place.
Another extremely rare neurological disorder is porencephaly in which the cavities or cysts take place within the cerebral hemisphere.
However, in both the disorders, the children have severe disabilities like intellectual problems, seizures, and absent speech development, and life expectancy is very low.
The patient rapidly recovered from his attack but denied a request by doctors to conduct more tests on his brain.
The identity of the man is still anonymous since he stated that he did not want any type of fame.
