Police officers in Staunton City, Virginia were left heartbroken after their hero police dog tragically died in the line of duty.
Cara, a Labrador retriever, fell at least 50 feet from a bridge while searching for a gun. According to the Sherrif’s Office, she suffered a broken back and had to be put to sleep.
In an interview with the News Leader, Staunton City Sheriff Matt Robertson said: “Apparently the guy threw a gun.
“Cara was out looking for it and she fell off a bridge. She fell at least 50 feet.”
Robertson paid tribute to the 3-year-old pooch, saying: “She was a big part of our family at the office, so it’s hard.”
He added: “she was a deputy. She was a member of our department.”
According to reports, the gun was thrown out of the car, which was carrying a wanted passenger.
28-year-old Brandi R. Campbell was charged with felony assault on law enforcement, felony hit and run, obstruction of justice, felony eluding law enforcement, and reckless driving after she struck two police officers with her car while they tried to arrested Christopher Hoylman.
