A dog, who was left abandoned, was found starving and was forced to eat bits of glass and old batteries.
The dog named Eric was found covered in urine in the garden of an empty council house in Accrington, Lancashire.
When he was found, he was too thin that his ribs were clearly visible. He was unable to stand so the rescuers had to wrap him in a metallic thermal blanket to keep him warm.
The veterinary staff later named him Eric and began treating him.
RSPCA inspector Nina Small said: “As well as being the thinnest dog I’ve ever seen alive, he had very overgrown nails and was absolutely covered in urine. His feces had pieces of glass and metal as big as a 50 pence piece in it, and bits of batteries.”
“I believe poor Eric has been confined somewhere out of sight, eating whatever he’s been able to get in his mouth, perhaps in a garage or a shed.”
Eric is now recovering and put on nearly a kilo. He is currently in a foster home and is able to walk.
“He’s now able to stand and can take a few steps and it’s looking like he’s turned a corner, but he still has a long way to go,” Ms. Small added.
“He’s just gone to a foster home where he is continuing to get the TLC he needs to hopefully continue to recover.”
The RSPCA has urged the public to provide information about the dog’s owner who is responsible for his condition.
The RSPCA has asked residents of the Ribblesdale Avenue area of Accrington to check their CCTV footage to find out who dumped him in the garden.
If you have any information about who dumped Eric, please call the RSPCA’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018.
