While there is no doubt that dogs are man’s best friend, it is also true that they potentially have a wild and dangerous side in them that can unleash at any time for whatever reason.
The death of an elderly Floridian and her son’s severe injury is a great testament to that fact.
Carolyn Varanese was an 84 year old women who resided in Margate, Florida. On Friday, she was announced dead due to a series of attacks from her dog, which was later identified in her household. The dog’s breed is said to be of a mixed breed according to reports.
During this attack, Carolyn’s 57 year old sone Joseph also sustained major injuries as he tried to stop the dog and save his mother from the vicious attacks. Local police disclosed that both Carolyn and Joseph had been bitten several times by the end.
By the time medical help arrived on the scene, Carolyn was pronounced dead on the scene. Joseph was taken to a nearby hospital and is said to have been released after receiving treatment by Saturday. Carolyn is said to have used a wheelchair when she was alive.
A family friend of the Varanese recalled what happened on the horrific night when the attack took place. Joseph had adopted the dog just weeks ago from a local rescue center, according to this friend.
Although what took place on the night is still under investigation, this friend said that the dog first bit Carolyn’s ankle and then tried going for the kill by biting her jugulars. Joseph tried to stop the worst case scenario by beating on the dog using his mother’s wheelchair.
This same friend said Joseph has sustained serious injuries all over his face during this fight. Different neighbors had different impressions over the attack and death. While some said that the dog looked calm, others remembered how dumbfounded Joseph seemed at the end.
The exact breed of the dog seems to differ based on the media source. While some reported it as a mix breed of the American Boxer, others identified the dog as a pure pit bull.
