Mason is a fifteen-year-old boy who’s always wanted to adopt a pet.

When he was young, he planned to have a hedgehog as his friend but as he grew up and got to know the world, his inclination changed towards dogs.

To find the right dog to adopt, Mason kept going through the websites of a number of shelter sites, eventually finding an adorable puppy with big eyes filled with eternal sorrow.

When Mason went to the shelter with his parents to physically examine the puppy, the shelter staff told them the story of the little puppy’s life.

The puppy had spent the first few weeks of his life tied to a tree outside a house. There was no love, care or attention that the innocent soul got. As a result, he became afraid of just everything.

Mason decided to adopt the puppy and named him Hedgie.

When Hedgie first went to Mason’s place, he was scared and afraid of everything. But the boy was fully determined to shower him with all the love, care and pampering he deserved.

On the first day at his new house, Hedgie spent time hiding below a table.

However, things changed when Mason showed him the love he had for him. He took Hedgie to his room at night and spent time with him in his bed.

They both sat there and shared each other’s presence, finally developing a fairly strong bond.

That day onwards, Hedgie and Mason’s bond kept getting stronger and stronger. Hedgie started spending all his time with Mason and they both even slept in the same bed at night.

Mason’s family was surprised to see how fast they developed a strong bond.

Hedgie proved to be a clever dog. In no time, he learned a number of tricks including speaking on command and even the high five.

Unfortunately, just after a few months, the family got bad news. Mason noticed that Hedgie had trouble eating and ate very small amounts or not at all.

His mom took Hedgie to the vet who diagnosed that the little guy was suffering from myasthenia gravis and megaesophagus.

These diseases make it hard for dogs to swallow food and the vets usually prefer euthanasia for such dogs – which was obviously not an option for Mason.

So, Mason and his mom put in a great deal of effort and discovered a specially designed chair to be used for dogs with Hedgie’s condition.

The chair utilized gravity to assist dogs in swallowing food. It worked very well for Hedgie and he started eating like a normal dog again.

However, Hedgie still needs a little assistance to eat while sitting in the chair.

He loves it when Mason feeds him. Hedgie is a full-grown dog now but has the same bond with Mason as he had as a pup. He still sleeps with Mason in his bed.

The inhumane behavior Hedgie faced at the very start of his life made him shy and reserved. But after getting a good family and a loving friend, Hedgie has become a confident dog.
