From more utilitarian animals, dogs are now considered part of the family. And while they have been heavily domesticated, they still retain that fierce loyalty that allows them to put their own lives at risk for the sake of their owners.

This is true not just for the big breeds like Huskies and Labradors but also the smaller toy dog breeds such as French Bulldogs. There’s a saying that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight that matters but the size of the fight in the dog. And when it comes to protecting their beloved owners, this is so true.

But along with this fierce loyalty is an adoring love that lends itself to devotion and tenderness when dealing with their human family members, even the little ones.

In this adorable video, we see a hulking Alaskan Malamute just chilling out on the floor. Then a toddler shows up to pet him. And what does the dog do? He reaches a paw to her and basically “hugs” her as she sits down on the floor with him and hearts just melted across the world at that sight.

Because dogs don’t have the capacity for speech, they show their affection through body language. In this case, it was through a hug but dogs often wag their tails in order to show that they are happy. A dog’s lick is a sign of love and affection and that they are seeking more contact with you so that they can be pampered.

Even the act of sniffing your crotch is a sign of affection, the canine equivalent of a handshake.

It’s important to be aware of these things so that we can reciprocate the love and affection that they show us.

One other amazing thing about dogs is that dogs have the ability to detect human pain. This is why they make such amazing support dogs because they can immediately detect a change in feelings and behavior in their wards and act accordingly.

It’s definitely a partnership made in heaven and looks to continue for ages to come.
