A Golden Retriever saved her owner’s life after she lay on top of him for 20 long hours to keep him warm in bitter cold temperatures.
The man from Michigan, Bob, was home with his loyal pooch, Kelsey, watching football on New Year’s Eve.
It was around 10:30 pm when he decided to step outside to get more firewood. He was only wearing a shirt, long johns, and slippers.
But while walking to the woodpile, Bob slipped and broke his neck, leaving him paralyzed.
Speaking about the incident, he said: “I was screaming for help but my nearest neighbor is about a quarter mile away and it was 10:30 p.m., but my Kelsey came.
“By morning my voice was gone and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking.”
The loyal dog did the most heroic act to save her owner by lying on top of him to keep him warm during the freezing temperatures. She also stayed with him the whole time.
“She kept barking for help but never left my side,” he shared. “She kept me warm and alert. I knew I had to persevere through this and that it was my choice to stay alive.”
Kelsey howled and barked as Bob tried to scream. She kept on barking even when Bob already lost his voice.
The doc also licked his arms and face to keep him awake. However, he went unconscious after 19 hours. Kelsey barked and howled so loud that a neighbor finally heard her.
It was around 6:30 pm on New Year’s Day when Bob was finally found. He was immediately taken to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital where it was reported that he was suffering from hypothermia.
Neurosurgeon Chaim Colen said: “I immediately took the patient back to the operating room for decompression of his spinal cord and stabilization. After the surgery, miraculously, he started to move his extremities with greater strength.”
Bob said: “I was surprised to find out that I didn’t have any frost bite. I am sure it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep me warm and safe.”
He added: “I am so thankful for my two heroes. Kelsey kept me warm, alert, and never stopped barking for help. Dr. Colen saved my life and ability to move. They are truly heroes and I will be eternally grateful.”
