A loving yellow Labrador retriever started life in a heartbreaking way.
The male pooch was first named Lucky but ended up spending the first years of his life locked in his previous owner’s backyard.
The Texas dog was forced to stay outside even during the hot summer months. Unlike his six sisters and brothers, Beaux Tox was weak and had numerous health conditions.
Because he was squished in their mother’s womb, his face developed in a malformed manner. Fortunately, the dog’s dilemma was discovered by Jamie Hulit.
Hulit already fosters many dogs but she didn’t think twice when it comes to adopting this malformed but beautiful dog.
She said to Fox News: “(I) didn’t even want to foster him. I just want to adopt him right away.”
Hulit also renamed the loving pooch! “I couldn’t see anything lucky about this dog,” she expressed. “And I always give animals I rescue a new name, kind of as their new lease on life. I named him Beaux Tox because he looks like he needs injections.”
Beaux Tox’s vet thought he would not be able to make it. Weighing only 42 pounds, the pooch was extremely thin.
The yellow lab also had heartworms, a parasitic disease that can kill canines. His condition was so severe that he had to spend a month in and out of an oxygen tank.
His new life with Hulit made him happier. In fact, he even likes to visit the vet. “He thinks he owns that place. After all it was his second home there for a while,” Hulit shared.
“I see neglect as a form of abuse,” Hulit said of the dog’s lost early years.
“Maybe it’s not the same as physical abuse, but it does manifest itself physically. You could tell, even at his lowest points, he just wanted to live, to pull through.”
She added: “He was all-in, so we went all-in on him, too.”
