An emotional dog was caught on camera saying his goodbyes to his sickly owner while the man had been staying at a hospital for hospice care.
When John Vincent entered hospice care at Raymond G. Murphy Veterans Affairs Medical Center, he was forced to say goodbye to his beloved dog, Patch, and give him away to the Albuquerque Animal Welfare shelter.
During Mr. Vincent’s stay, the hospital reached out to the shelter and pleaded with them to let Patch see his owner, who missed him very much, one more time.
Fortunately, the shelter agreed without a doubt and the institutions arranged for the pair to be reunited.
“We said, ‘Tell us when and where,’ this wasn’t even a question,” AAW’s Director Danny Nevarez said in an interview with The Dodo.
As he went on to claim, something in the dog changed as soon as the staff arrived at the hospital for the visit.
“Even though he’d never been there before, he put his paws up onto the window and started whimpering, and everyone was like, ‘Oh my God, he knows, he knows what’s about to happen,’” Mr. Nevarez added.
According to the director, Patch and Vincent began acting as if they were never even apart as soon as they got reunited.
“Patch was just licking him everywhere, just burrowing his head into Mr. Vincent’s chest. Everyone was welling up just to witness this,” he added.
After spending a whole day together, Patch and his owner once again said their goodbyes and the shelter embarked on the mission to provide the pooch with a new owner.
Fortunately, another veteran soon contacted the shelter and offered to take Patch in because he believes they were meant to end up together.
The new owner has also promised to visit Vincent, together with Patch, in the hospital as often as possible.
