A German shepherd is being taken care of by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office as his owner was diagnosed with coronavirus.
The loyal pup was stranded on a boat when his owner was rushed to hospital with symptoms of COVID-19.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, they rescued the pup after the owner contacted them and made a desperate plea to take care of his furry companion.
They shared on Facebook: “The owner of a liveaboard vessel anchored in the Manatee Pocket made a desperate plea to MCSO to rescue his dog after being hospitalized for possible COVID-19.
“The owner contacted MCSO to say he had no choice but to leave his beloved German shepherd behind alone inside the boat as he was hospitalized for the illness.
“MCSO’s Marine Unit worked with Animal Services Officers to create a plan that would ensure the safety of the officers boarding the boat and the rescue of the stranded animal.”
The post also said that the team ‘dressed in full persona protective gear’ when they went to the boat.
“The team dressed in full personal protective gear and headed out to the vessel, where they boarded the boat and located the dog,” the post continued.
When they found the pooch, they managed to take him from the boat and get him to the shore.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office added: “Animal Services Officers then transported the dog to a facility where he will remain until his owner recovers from the illness.
“Nice work by an amazing team dedicated to getting the job done, despite the circumstances.”
Several pictures from the rescue were shared by authorities. In one photo, the adorable dog gave one of his rescuers a warm kiss on their face mask.
One Facebook user commented: “You are all so giving. This makes my heart so happy. I’m sure the hospitalized man is so grateful and knowing that is dog is safe and well will surely give him the strength to get better quickly. Thank you MCSO.”
Another wrote: “Thank you MCSO for taking care of this precious dog for the sick owner. God Bless MCSO & all our first responders.”
A third said: “You all are AMAZING! Prayers that he is reunited with his dog very soon.”
