A German shepherd named Heidi has been praised as a hero for swimming for 11 long hours in the dark to help her owner after their boat capsized in waters.
Heidi was found by a passing fisherman swimming in Moreton Bay amongst tackle box, wet suit, fuel tank, and other boat debris.
The fisherman immediately raised the alarm with authorities who launched a search and rescue mission for the pooch’s owner.
For the operation, Queensland police enlisted the use of the Rescue 500 helicopter, a Marine Safety Queensland jet ski, the volunteer Marine Rescue, Volunteer Marine Coast Guard, and four police vessels.
Heidi’s owner was eventually spotted clinging to the overturned boat. After he was rescued, he explained to officers how his boat lost power and started taking in water.
The 63-year-old was in the water for 15 long hours just hoping for someone to pass by and help him. He also mentioned that Heidi, his very loyal companion, was swimming for 11 hours trying to search for help.
“We would take this opportunity to remind boaties to plan for the worst when they’re out on the water,” said Senior Sergeant Jay Bairstow from Brisbane Water.
“Always wear personal flotation device and ensure that your safety equipment, including EPIRBs, are tested and in good order.
“Thankfully there was a happy ending to this search and Heidi was able to be our honorary PD for the day.”
When the hero pooch was rescued from the water, she was also rushed to the vet and given food. After paddling for almost half a day, she got a much needed rest.
Queensland Police also made brave Heidi an honorary police dog for the day.
