Health officials have stated that an outbreak of Salmonella has been linked to pig ears treat, meant for dogs.
Reports confirm more than 120 pet owners have gotten sick due to contact with these treats.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC has stated that it is not clear whether the infections have spread due to consuming the snacks directly or just by touching them.
Despite no reported deaths, the outbreak has become a matter of national importance, with such incidents occurring in various states like Michigan, Iowa, New York, etc. Moreover, no dogs have been reported to get sick as well.

Pig ears are popular among dog owners as an ideal pet food. It is because of their chewy and dense nature, that dogs love munching on the snack so much.
Its popularity is such that many owners have tried replicating the recipe and posted them online. It is perhaps the most famous dog treat with big dogs, old dogs and even puppies eating them.
The US Food and Drug Administration or FDA, and the CDC have warned pet owners about buying or feeding their dogs with any kind of pig ear treats.
No specific company has been linked with the pig ear treat contamination, and it seems that the products of several companies have been infecting people here and there.
Due to this reason, companies have started taking the product back from the shelves of stores.
Before reaching to a fixed solution, people have been advised to properly wash their hands after feeding their pets and to wash the bowls in which they eat as well. Many cases of children falling sick have also been reported with a majority being under five years old.
Salmonella symptoms include vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, etc. usually people recover without any serious medical treatment but in some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed. It usually lasts less than a week in normal cases.
Moreover, the CDC has advised people to visit the hospital or their doctors if the symptoms last more than a week, or if blood is found in their stools.
