A group of adorable dogs is helping cheer up seals at a sanctuary amid the coronavirus lockdown so that the animals don’t feel too lonely.
With the closure of The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in England, seals that are used to getting tens of thousands of human visitors each year have allegedly started feeling lonely and isolated.
To counter the lack of social interactions, the staff at the sanctuary have started bringing their own dogs to work with them and let them bond with the adorable mammals – something that turned out to be a huge success.
“With the Sanctuary having no guests walking around, our animals have definitely noticed the difference,” The Cornish Seal Sanctuary spokesperson expressed on Facebook.
“The team have been working around the clock to provide lots of extra enrichment and fun for the animals to keep them healthy, happy and entertained.
“With ideas running out, our team decided to bring their dogs in to say hello to the seals and to remind them of what it is like when the Sanctuary is open.”
As the staff went on to say, the seals appeared to have enjoyed having interactions with the dogs after weeks of loneliness.
According to the sanctuary’s spokesperson, the staff has also been playing music for the animals in order to reduce anxious behavior and keep them calm.
“This follows research conducted at the Sanctuary by student Mati Skerrit, in 2017. She found that playing classical music to our California sea lions decreased anxious behaviors and increased time spent playing and swimming,” the spokesperson explained.
