Dolphins Rescued From A Hotel Pool Where They Were Kept To Attract Tourists

Several dolphins had been kept at a chlorinated pool at a hotel in Bali, Indonesia, in order to attract ignorant tourists who thought it would be fun to see the animals swimming and performing tricks in such a tiny place.

Fortunately, the animal rights activists have now rescued the last two dolphins of the pod from the hands of Melka Hotel located in northern Bali.

Two mammals, Dewa and Johnny, have already been transported to a sanctuary because they can’t return to the wild due to the condition they were left in by living in a chlorinated pool for years. The other two that just got rescued will join them shortly as well.

After several reports involving animal abuse allegations, the Dolphin Project partnered with Jakarta Animal Aid Network and Indonesian Natural Resources Conservation Centre to organize a rescue mission.

Besides the dolphins, the rescuers also came across two leaf monkeys and three saltwater crocodiles which were kept in miserable conditions.

“We just removed the last dolphin from the Melka Hotel Swimming Pool. Time to pull the plug and EMPTY THE TANK,” the non-profit organization wrote in a post.

As they explained, the toxic water in the pool resulted in one of the dolphins becoming nearly fully blind while the other one lost all teeth.

According to Richard O’Barry of the Dolphin Project, five trainers lost their job at the Melka hotel after the dolphins were taken away.

“Jobs are hard to find in these parts. They have families and kids to raise. So we hired them. Gave them a raise. Put them to work as caregivers at the sanctuary.

Johnny – Dolphin Project

“They couldn’t be happier being part of the crew and helping us with this pioneer effort. They threw away their Melka Hotel T-shirt and put on Dolphin Project shirts.”
