A father has been getting up at 2 am to start making doughnuts since he opened his shop last week in Missouri City, Texas.
But Satharith By’s shop, Billy’s Donuts, had been slow. So his son decided to share it on social media so his friends could see and buy.
He wrote on Twitter: “My dad is sad cause no one is coming to his new donut shop.” He also added a crying face emoji and photos of his father at the counter.
His post had been retweeted thousands of times within hours, and his father’s shop had sold out! The tweet had over 330,000 retweets, including the Twitter company account, actor James Wood, and filmmaker Casey Neistat. It also has over 600,000 likes!
Speaking about the incredible moment, Billy said: “I was just trying to help my dad gain more business through my friends, but eventually, other people saw it too.”
KPRC stopped by the doughnut shop and reported it was “slammed with customers buying sweets, soda and other items.”
Billy wrote on Twitter: “We completely sold out of donuts and kolaches! You are all amazing. I can’t thank everyone enough for coming out and supporting local businesses. This means so much to my family.”
The By family is not new to selling doughnuts. Satharith By came to the U.S. from Cambodia and opened a shop in California 20 years ago, according to Billy.
But the family decided to sell the shop when By’s wife got sick. They opened a new shop in Texas after she recovered.
“He came here about 20, 30 years ago to find a better life and this is it,” Billy said.
Satharith By said: “Right now, I’m very happy.” He also added: “Thank you for the community. And thank you for the customer that come.”
