Christine Elliott, the Health Minister, acknowledged that any death that is related to COVID-19 or not is a tragedy. Whether it is due to cardiac issues or cancer, the families have lost their members, which is devastating. However, the medical association had to make such hard decisions.

The decision to delay treatments was made by medical professionals’ team years ago to deal with such pandemic situations. They understand that the decision has left many people anxious and cost lives, but the medical institutions had no choice but to take such measures.

The 35 deaths estimated by the UHN were based on the research and analysis of historical data. The data, however, does not include any confirmed COVID-19 patients.

Moreover, around 12, 2000, surgeries and medical procedures are being delayed every week. And as of April 23, 2020, the total number of delayed cases has reached 52, 700, and this figure is only going to climb up. The hospitals are operating at a capacity of around 69%.

Elective procedures, on the other hand, are typically not optional. These are not required immediately, according to the medical professionals, and are riskier to conduct amidst a crisis.

Such surgeries encompass cancer procedures, surgeries related to blood vessel issues, cardiac procedures, hernia operations, hip replacements, gall bladder operation, cosmetic surgeries, and cataract surgery.

The report also said the longer these procedures are delayed, the higher will be the health complications and more complex will it be for hospitals to clear their backlogs.
