Drugmakers are trying to find a vaccine for the deadly coronavirus which is believed to have originated in the central city of Wuhan in China.
But the drugmakers have a long way to go.
More than a dozen drugmakers are working to find a vaccine or a treatment for the virus that continues to spread across the world.
The deadly coronavirus has killed more than 400 people and infected more than 20,000 people across the world.
Now, the drugmakers are desperately trying to find a vaccine for the deadly coronavirus but it will take at least 12 to 18 months.
Thomas Breuer, chief medical officer of GlaxoSmithKline’s vaccine unit, said: “It will take at least 12 to 18 months, which means in the acute situation we are in now – at least in China – that will not create a benefit.”
Several cities have been placed under lockdown to stop the spread of the deadly virus which emerged in December in China.
Executives at Gilead Sciences said they are working on an experimental antiviral treatment.
Gilead Chief Medical Officer Merdad Parsey said: “There is a distinction there between a therapeutic and a vaccine.
Having said that, I think it is true that this won’t be super fast and it will involve us investing at risk right now.”
On Wednesday, a report claimed that a research team at Zhejiang University has found a drug for the deadly virus while researchers in the UK also told Sky News that they had also found a vaccine for the virus.
However, World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said there are no effective drugs for the virus for now. He said: “There are no known effective therapeutics against this 2019-nCoV.”
The World Health Organization officials have also announced that the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak is not a pandemic.
The officials also have said that the transmission of the deadly virus can be controlled.
Dr. Sylvie Briand, director of the World Health Organization’s Infectious Hazards Management Department, said in a press conference: “We are not in a pandemic.”
