Drunk and disrespectful tourists who drove their scooter into the pool of a rented villa have defended their actions and claimed they weren’t being disrespectful to the locals.
The incident occurred in Bali, Indonesia, where the authorities have been working tirelessly to get rid of unruly tourists and foreign beggars during the recent years.
In the footage shared on social media, Australian tourists were seen driving a scooter into their rented villa’s pool as a part of their drunken mischiefs.
The video was shared online by 23-year-old Perth-based Raymond RB who said they weren’t being disrespectful to the locals despite their foolish actions.
“I’m not too bothered by people saying I’m immature. I just don’t want people thinking it’s a rental scooter… [that] I’m disrespecting the locals,” he said in an interview with 9News before explaining that he owned the scooter.
Nevertheless, people, including some locals from Bali, were less than pleased with the stunt and called out the drunken men for being disorderly.
“We as Balinese people really respect every tourist come to visit our island, but sometimes we aren’t respected cause this reason. Oh my,” someone wrote.
“Even if you own the scooter it doesn’t mean you can go around crashing it into the pool of the villa that you DON’T own… Have some common sense, your actions were disrespectful no matter what you think,” another one said.
The incident followed shortly after Bali authorities announced unmarried tourists could be jailed for up to six months if caught having sex outside of marriage while spending their holidays on the paradise island.
While Bali has always been known as a ‘safe haven’ and the hotspot for tourism in the country, the authorities are now cracking down on ‘unruly’ tourists by introducing a new law that forbids people to have intercourse outside marriage while in the country.
As the authorities explained, it doesn’t matter if the act is consensual if the people participating in it are not married. “Couples who live together without being legally married could be sentenced to six months in prison,” Article 419 explains.
In addition to fornication, tourists could also be jailed for performing “obscene acts in public,” meaning that yelling while strolling drunk around the paradise island could result in months behind the bars.
After the law passed, human rights groups warned that the new rules contradict modern international laws.
“It is very serious. It’s a disaster and the two articles covering living together and extramarital sex were pushed by the Muslim brotherhood on ideological grounds. This will impact tourism, ex-patriots and foreign investment,” Andreas Harsono of Human Rights Watch said in an interview with Courier Mail.
