Action superstar Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has revealed in Esquire that he wants to be the next James Bond.
The 49-year-old said that he would like to carry on a family tradition and become a part of the franchise.
His grandfather, Peter Malvia, appeared in the Bond movie You Only Live Twice in 1967. The film featured Sean Connery as the main character and Peter as the muscle man for the main villain character Osato (Teru Shimada).
In an Esquire video, Dwayne said: “Yes, my grandfather was a Bond villain in You Only Live Twice with Sean Connery. Very, very cool.
“And I would like to follow in his footsteps and be the next Bond.
“I don’t wanna be a villain. You gotta be Bond.”
Barbara Broccoli, the one who controls the franchise with her half-brother Michael G. Wilson, told Variety last year that Bond will remain a man.
“He can be of any color, but he is male,” she said. “I believe we should be creating new characters for women – strong female characters.
“I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”
Two non-British actors have previously played Bond on the big screen – Irishman Pierce Brosnan and Australian George Lazenby.
The character was created by Ian Fleming, a former British spy who introduced him t the world in the 1952 novel Casino Royale.
He passed away in 1964, only three years after he signed the movie deal with Harry Saltzmann and Cubby Broccoli.
In a BBC documentary, Fleming’s stepdaughter revealed that he privately admitted in a letter to her grandmother: “I’m getting so tired of that a** Bond.”
