Earl Cameron CBE, best known for his roles in Inception, Doctor Who, and Thunderball, has passed away at the age of 102.
He lived in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, with his wife Barbara. He leaves behind six children.
One of the first successful black British actors, Cameron made his first appearance on screen in the 1951 film Pool of London.
Martin Beckett, a family friend, confirmed that the pioneering actor had passed away, according to the BBC.
“He had sheltered himself because of Covid and had not really been keen on going out, he had chest problems,” Mr. Beckett said.
“He’s a great character, very spiritual, very modest, we’re going to miss him.”
Cameron was born in Pembroke, Bermuda in 1917. He began his career with the British Merchant Navy before his acting career started in 1951.
He made his first appearance in Pool of London, making him the fourth black actor to play a prominent role in a British movie.
He then came in the 1955’s Simba and 1956’s Safari. He soon landed a role in Thunberball as 007’s assistant Pinder.
In a 2017 interview with the Guardian, Cameron said: “I never saw myself as a pioneer. It was only later, looking back, that it occurred to me that I was.”
Another highlight from Cameron’s acting career came in when he appeared in Doctor Who. He also appeared in The Tenth Planet, making him the first black actor to play an astronaut.
In 2009, he was appointed as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
His final acting credit was his appearance in the 2010 movie Inception. In 2013, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warwick and he was inducted into the Screen Nation Hall of Fame in 2016.
